Northglenn Students Learn the Science of Nutrition Bar Development

Every year, as part of STEM learning at Northglenn High School in Colorado, students work on an exciting project that educates them on food science and product development.  For the past 3 years, the project has been focused on groups of students developing their own line of custom nutrition bars.  These student groups have planned nutritional goals for their bars as well as targeting specific lifestyles and market niches.  These projects are reviewed by a panel of judges and the winning teams are afforded an additional opportunity to take their projects even further into development.

After judging, the winning groups are introduced to the rewards, struggles and complexities of entrepreneurship.  Having already tackled the science behind nutritional health and the production of nutrition bars, the winning groups agreed to continue on with development of the actual businesses to bring their creations to market.  By continuing these projects over the next two years of their high school careers, these students will learn about marketing, sales, accounting and many other aspects of business.  Students will work with business volunteers to start LLCs and even apply for small business loans.

YouBar has had the pleasure of helping students at Northglenn High realize their creations by manufacturing their actual nutrition bars as part of their final projects.  By being able to see, feel and taste their bars, this project jumps from an exercise in theory to a tangible business concept.  We offer huge congratulations to the three winning groups on their winning “teenage pregnancy, grappling and the fit” bars.  We certainly look forward to seeing how their business will develop in the future!
